SPIRIT
A new initiative for Transportation Safety
SPIRIT (Students and Parents Involved in Reporting Irresponsible Transportation) will start to take form in September. We will notify all the local bus companies that we have started a "quality control" program where all of our school families will be monitoring buses and drivers who are not following the rules of the road or are driving improperly. We will contact the bus company when we fell a bus is being driven irresponsibly and will be keeping a registry at our school which will be shared amoung all schools,public and private. If a bus company has a proportionately greater number of complaints, we will again notify the bus company and the school district with our complaint and urge them to not contract with the violating company for the following year. Additionally, this information will be made public as a way to impress upon the bus companies that bus drivers who do not follow safe driving habits will not be tolerated. The Diocese is reviewing this program a nd may be willing to help fund a training course for parents and children to become more proactive with their own safety. SPIRIT will be on the agenda in the fall when all the Diocesan school boards meet.
In the meantime practice watching buses and make sure they drive safely. If the don't, get the name of the bus company and as much other information as possible(time of day,bus #,road and direction of travel and description of driver if possible) and call the company to voice your complaint and remind them that as a parent you are always monitoring school buses for safety and you are part of the SPIRIT program. If we all become involved the bus companies will be forced to monitor their drivers more carefully, train them better and make better decisions about who they will allow to be behind the wheel of a bus with YOUR child on it.
