Merrick Road Intersection
On Wednesday, October 17, 2007, there was a meeting in front of St. Christopher’s Church / School to discuss the possibility of installing a traffic control device to reduce the speed of the cars on Merrick Road. Those present included: parents, parishioners, recent graduates, and all of the 5th through 8th grade students.
As you may know, Catherine Dara spearheaded this project, beginning with a petition. After getting an overwhelming amount of signatures, she arranged a meeting with Fr. Steve, Mrs. Lederer, Legislator Joseph Scannell along with LuAnn from his office, and Commissioner Ray Ribeiro of the Nassau County Department of Public Works.
Several possible solutions were discussed during this meeting including Painting School Zone on Merrick Road, putting up new signs, and installing flashing yellow lights. Our next step is to work with the Town of Hempstead to get permission for the street painting and have it put on their schedule. Legislator Joseph Scannell hopes that this can be accomplished before the cold weather arrives. Simultaneously, he and LuAnn will be working together to include traffic controls in their 2008 budget proposal.
